The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended a Nairobi-based lawyer suspected of misusing Ksh49.4 million meant for a land transaction.

Detectives from the DCI Nairobi Regional Office arrested the advocate, who is expected to face charges of stealing by an agent under Section 283(b) of the Penal Code. The investigation continues as authorities probe the alleged financial misconduct.

Details of the Alleged Fraud

  • The complainant transferred Ksh49,400,500 to the lawyer in several instalments between November 16, 2023, and January 3, 2024.
  • Funds were intended to facilitate the purchase of a parcel of land.
  • Investigators claim the advocate diverted the money for personal use instead of completing the land acquisition.

The case came to light following a review of the transaction by the DCI Nairobi office. The lawyer was arrested in Kilimani Sub-County and is currently in custody awaiting court arraignment.

Context

This incident is among recent high-profile land fraud cases in Kenya. Notably, a former journalist and his wife face charges involving a Ksh1.17 billion fraudulent land deal in Syokimau.
