Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has called on opposition leaders, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, to consolidate their efforts and present a unified front ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking after a consultative meeting with Kalonzo on July 30, 2026, Sifuna emphasized that Kenyans desire a cohesive opposition that speaks with one voice and acts as a single team to challenge President William Ruto’s bid for a second term.
Countrywide Consultations Reveal Demand for Unity
Sifuna revealed that the opposition has been conducting nationwide engagements, receiving clear feedback from supporters urging collaboration among the various factions. He stated, "Our people want to see us together, united as those who believe President Ruto should not serve a second term."
Shared Values Over Electoral Calculus
The senator stressed that the drive for unity should be grounded in shared principles and a common vision for Kenya’s future rather than mere electoral strategy. He highlighted the importance of focusing on democratic governance, constitutional freedoms, and human rights—issues that resonate deeply with young Kenyans.
"Roads can be built by anyone, but only a democrat will protect the freedoms and rights under our Constitution," Sifuna said, underscoring the need to make civil liberties a central pillar of the opposition’s agenda.
Engaging Across the Political Divide
The consultations also include outreach to leaders beyond the traditional opposition. Sifuna noted ongoing discussions with Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua and affirmed plans to engage other political figures to build a broad-based coalition.
He concluded, "We aim to present one formidable team and not let down Kenyans."
