The High Court in Nakuru has convicted two police officers in separate murder trials related to fatal shootings that occurred several years ago. The rulings were secured by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), reinforcing efforts to hold law enforcement accountable for unlawful use of lethal force.
Double Murder at Mercy Njeri Shopping Centre
On July 6, 2026, Police Constable Francis Kiarie was found guilty of murdering John Maina and Charles Kariuki. The two men were fatally shot on December 3, 2016, at Mercy Njeri Shopping Centre in Nakuru County. Kiarie is currently awaiting sentencing.
Salgaa Trading Centre Shooting
Three days later, on July 9, 2026, APC Isaac Lekachuma, formerly stationed at Salgaa AP Post, was convicted for the murder of Emmanuel Makokha. Makokha was shot dead on October 2, 2017, at Salgaa Trading Centre, also in Nakuru County. Lekachuma remains in custody pending sentencing.
