Nancy Jepng’etich, Kenya’s reigning African Under-20 800m champion, is setting her sights on clinching the world title at the upcoming World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Oregon, USA, scheduled from August 5 to 9.
The 19-year-old athlete, currently training with a 23-member Kenyan squad at Kasarani, has shown remarkable progress since winning gold at the African U-20 Championships in Abeokuta, Nigeria, last year. She will team up with Marion Jepchumba as Kenya seeks to defend the women’s 800m crown previously won by Sarah Moraa at the 2024 World U-20 Championships in Lima, Peru.
Preparation and Progress
Jepng’etich has improved her speed significantly during the residential training camp in Nairobi, boosting her confidence ahead of the global event. She boasts a personal best of 2:00.01 in the 800m and recently earned silver in the Under-20 race at this year’s Kip Keino Classic, reinforcing her status as one of Kenya’s top middle-distance prospects.
“Since joining the camp, our speed has improved a lot. Winning gold in Africa gave me the motivation to compete at the highest level. I am ready to give my best in Oregon,” Jepng’etich said.
Stepping Up to Senior Level
To enhance her endurance and speed, Jepng’etich has also been competing in senior events, including the Rabat Diamond League, where she set a personal best of 4:03.90 in the 1500m. This exposure has prepared her well for her final appearance in the Under-20 category.
“I want to end my junior career on a high note and make Kenyans proud. I am determined to deliver my best performance,” she added.
