Nation Media Group (NMG) has resumed its broadcasting and print operations in Uganda after a month-long suspension imposed by the country's military.
The reopening was authorised by President Yoweri Museveni, ending the shutdown that began on June 28 when armed security forces surrounded NMG's premises in Namuwongo, Kampala. This action halted transmissions of NTV Uganda, Spark TV, and the publication of the Daily Monitor.

Taifa Group chairman Rostam Azizi expressed gratitude to President Museveni and Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for facilitating the resumption. Azizi reaffirmed the group's commitment to responsible journalism and socio-economic development in Uganda through sustainable investments and partnerships.
Similarly, NMG chairman Joe Muganda highlighted plans to restore operations promptly and rebuild connections with audiences, employees, and commercial partners. He emphasised strengthening local content and delivering credible journalism across print, broadcast, and digital platforms.
Regional Integration and Media Freedom
The resumption underscores the strong ties between Uganda and Tanzania and the broader East African commitment to regional integration and economic cooperation. Taifa Group noted that NMG's presence across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda positions it to foster regional dialogue and development.
The military closure had sparked condemnation from media bodies and rights groups, including the Kenya Editors Guild, which decried the shutdown as a violation of media freedom and urged Ugandan authorities to uphold due process.
