The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has raised alarm over the increasing political violence and intolerance in Kenya, warning that such unrest could lead the country towards lawlessness.

In a statement released following violent incidents in Homa Bay County, NCIC condemned the attacks on political gatherings, describing them as a serious threat to peace, security, and democratic processes.

Calls for Responsible Political Engagement

The commission emphasized that all Kenyans have the constitutional right to hold political events anywhere in the country, provided they do so within the law. However, it stressed that these freedoms must be exercised responsibly, without inciting violence, hate speech, or disorder.

NCIC has initiated proceedings to summon political figures believed to be responsible for instigating the recent unrest, holding them accountable for their actions.

Appeal to Leaders and Youth

The commission urged political leaders, their followers, and especially young people to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. It warned against the use of political supporters as instruments of violence or disruption of peaceful democratic participation.

Constitutional Rights and Public Order

Highlighting Article 37 of the Kenyan Constitution, NCIC reminded the public that while everyone has the right to assemble and demonstrate peacefully, these rights come with the responsibility to maintain peace and public order.

Context of Recent Violence

  • Violence erupted during Linda Mwananchi rallies in Homa Bay, where a vehicle was set on fire, several individuals including journalists were injured, and 17 suspects were arrested.
  • Earlier attacks included an assault on a hotel in Homa Bay and stoning of a convoy belonging to Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua in Nakuru.

The commission also condemned excessive use of force during political events, emphasizing that peaceful democratic participation relies on respecting constitutional rights and the rule of law.

NCIC's Call for Unity

NCIC decried the rise in divisive political rhetoric nationwide and called on all political actors to reject hostility and ethnic antagonism. It urged embracing dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect to strengthen Kenya's democratic fabric.
