Ndia MP George Kariuki has expressed strong disapproval of the leadership displayed by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, stating that both have failed Mt Kenya.
Speaking at Gacharu in Ndia, Kariuki criticized the ongoing political rivalry between the two leaders, which has intensified as the 2027 General Election approaches. He argued that neither Gachagua nor Kindiki has demonstrated the capability to effectively lead the region.
"Both have had the chance to prove their leadership, but they have greatly disappointed our community," Kariuki said. He urged the region to reject divisive politics driven by insults and aggression.
Call for Leadership Rooted in Unity and Tolerance
Kariuki invoked the leadership style of former President Mwai Kibaki, highlighting his emphasis on tolerance, restraint, and unity rather than confrontation. He emphasized that leadership should not be about personal attacks or loud political battles but about bringing people together.
He warned that allowing emotions and personal disputes to dictate political decisions could weaken Mt Kenya’s bargaining power in the next government formation.
Political Divisions Threaten Regional Influence
The MP’s remarks come amid a fresh exchange of accusations between Gachagua and Kindiki. Gachagua has accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of attempts to divide the region and questioned Kindiki’s ability to unite it. Kindiki responded by accusing Gachagua of divisive politics and trying to control the region’s political direction.
Kariuki positioned himself as an alternative voice advocating for development and unity. He stressed the importance of Mt Kenya securing a strong role in the next government, rather than waiting to be allocated positions after other communities negotiate their interests.
"We are nearing the end of this government's term. We must decide where we want to be when the next government is formed. We want to be part of forming the government and negotiating our place," he said.
Opposition to Regional Fragmentation
Kariuki also opposed efforts to split the region into competing blocs, highlighting that residents have rejected such divisions. He singled out Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, accusing him of being used to promote a divisive agenda and calling for an end to such narratives.
While hosting a delegation from Ruiru led by MP Simon King'ara, Kariuki reiterated that Mt Kenya needs leadership that unites people and follows Kibaki’s example, rather than one fueled by anger and personal clashes.
