Netflix ignited a wave of emotions among Money Heist fans, especially in Kenya, after posting a mock WhatsApp conversation that revealed the death of the popular character Nairobi.

The post, shared on Netflix's verified Facebook page on August 1, displayed a fabricated chat from a contact labelled "my ex." The message casually disclosed, "Needed to let you know Nairobi died," alongside a photo of the character.

Known by her code name Nairobi, the character's real identity is Ágata Jiménez, portrayed by Alba Flores. Nairobi is a key member of the heist crew, specialising in counterfeiting and forgery during the Royal Mint and Bank of Spain operations.

Significance of Nairobi's Character

Nairobi stands out for her strong personality, emotional depth, and her heartfelt motivation to reunite with her son Axel, who is in state care. Her death occurs in Part 4, Episode 6, when she is shot by Gandía, the Bank of Spain's head of security. This moment was especially poignant as Nairobi had previously survived a sniper attack in Part 3.

Kenyans Respond to Nairobi's Fate

The character’s name, shared with Kenya’s capital city, struck a personal chord with Kenyan viewers. Social media comments blended sorrow with local humour, often referencing Kenyan politics:

  • @Mdzukulu Wa Stephen Makoti: "I blame rais for this😭❤️"
  • @Abubakar Habibu: "Berlin died. Nairobi died. Tokyo died. Which kind movie is this 😱"
  • @OL IV ER: "If Nairobi died then we have Mombasa😅"

This mixture of political satire and genuine grief highlights Nairobi's lasting impact on fans well beyond her final scene.
