For years, the Nithi Bridge on the Embu–Meru highway has been notorious for fatal accidents, with hundreds of lives lost due to hazardous road conditions rather than structural faults of the bridge itself.

Experts attribute the high accident rate mainly to the road's steep downhill approach from Meru, characterized by sharp successive bends, rapid elevation loss, limited visibility, and heavy traffic on a narrow carriageway. These factors often cause heavy vehicles to gain excessive speed, leading to brake failures and loss of control before the bridge.

A Comprehensive Engineering Solution

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is implementing a far-reaching project that goes beyond replacing the bridge. Key features include:

  • A new bridge approximately 880 metres long, significantly longer than the current one.
  • A redesigned road alignment with gentler gradients and wider lanes.
  • Improved visibility and smoother traffic flow to reduce sharp curves.
  • Compliance with modern highway safety standards to minimize crash risks.

This new alignment will spread elevation changes over a longer distance, enabling drivers to better control speed before crossing the river.

Previous government efforts focused on enforcement measures such as speed checks, road signs, and safety campaigns. Land acquisition, once a major hurdle, is now underway with the National Land Commission conducting compensation hearings. Contractors have received early access to start preliminary works on secured sections.
