Newcastle United have completed the signing of 24-year-old Czech goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Portuguese club Braga. The Magpies triggered his €30 million (£25.7 million) release clause and secured him on a five-year contract.
Hornicek is expected to challenge Nick Pope for the starting goalkeeper position at St James' Park. Speaking about his move, Hornicek expressed excitement about joining Newcastle, praising the passionate fanbase and the vibrant football culture in the city.
Newcastle Sporting Director Ross Wilson described Hornicek as "one of Europe's top young goalkeepers," highlighting the club's confidence in his abilities.
The transfer comes amid a turbulent period for Newcastle, who recently parted ways with manager Eddie Howe after five years. The club finished 12th in the Premier League last season and has experienced significant squad changes during the summer window, including the departures of midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and forward Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. Captain Bruno Guimaraes is also reportedly attracting interest from Arsenal.
Newcastle will begin their 2026/27 Premier League campaign at home against Liverpool on August 23.
