On a somber Wednesday morning in October 2025, Kenya was shaken by the news of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death while receiving treatment in India. Despite initial rumors, confirmation of his passing plunged the nation into mourning.
Raila, who had been actively involved in planning ODM's 20th anniversary celebrations, left the country in good health and full of energy. His death marked the end of a significant chapter in Kenya’s political history, as he was widely regarded as a champion of democracy and a staunch advocate for human rights.
State Funeral and National Mourning
The government promptly took charge of the burial arrangements, honoring Raila with a state funeral and fulfilling his wish to be buried within 72 hours. His remains were repatriated from India amidst a high-level delegation’s efforts, and thousands of Kenyans participated in mourning ceremonies across the country.
At Kang'o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, Raila was laid to rest beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first vice president. The site has since been declared a national monument, drawing millions of visitors who continue to pay their respects months later.
Enduring Grief and Legacy
Despite the passage of time, grief remains palpable in Raila’s home village of Nyamira. Mzee Olang'o Nyabola, a close confidant, describes sleepless nights and a sense of hopelessness shared by many. “Raila stood for something; Raila was a spirit,” he reflects, emphasizing the late leader’s commitment to Kenya’s progress.
In Kajiado County, local sculptor Cleophas Mandela has created a statue of Raila, hoping it will be placed at the forthcoming mausoleum being constructed in Bondo. Mandela sees this as a way to preserve Raila’s legacy for future generations.
Political Shifts Within ODM
Raila’s death has also coincided with significant changes within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Edwin Sifuna, a close ally who served as Secretary General, was recently ousted and is now pursuing a new political path under the Linda Mwananchi banner. Meanwhile, ODM has publicly committed to supporting President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027 while insisting on securing the Deputy President position, currently held by Kithure Kindiki.
