NPS Hosts Senior Police Chiefs for 2027 Election Security Planning Workshop
The National Police Service gathers senior officers and stakeholders to finalize security strategies for Kenya's 2027 General Election.
The National Police Service (NPS) has brought together senior police chiefs and key stakeholders for a high-level workshop focused on enhancing security arrangements ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The two-day Election Security Planning Workshop commenced on August 19, 2026, at the Argyle Hotel along Mombasa Road in Nairobi. Organized by the NPS in partnership with the Ministry of Interior's Reform Unit, and supported by the British High Commission and the Electoral Law and Governance Institute for Africa (ELGIA), the forum aims to review and refine the draft Election Security Preparedness Road Map.
Key objectives of the workshop include:
- Evaluating progress on institutional preparations.
- Assessing priorities, operational needs, and resource allocation.
- Focusing on five thematic areas: public order management, technology use in policing, police accountability, training and capacity building, and stakeholder engagement.
The NPS emphasized its commitment to proactive planning, collaboration with partners, and adherence to human rights and police accountability standards to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
Senior officers attending the workshop represent various arms of the police service, including APS Director of Security Operations Jackson Kangani, KPS Director of Operations Philip Opiyo, Director of Reforms John Kamau, Director of ICT Samuel Mwilu, Director of the Internal Affairs Unit Paul Mumo, and DCI Director of Operations Samson Kiptum. APS Deputy Director of Logistics Gilbert Sumukwo and other senior officers are also present.
Partner representatives include British High Commission Policy Adviser Makena Kirima, Reform Unit consultant Dr. Charles Otieno, and ELGIA’s Peter Mwananchi.
This engagement is a critical step in fortifying coordination among institutions responsible for election security, with the aim of creating a safe and secure environment for all Kenyans during the August 2027 elections.
