The National Police Service (NPS) has launched the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit (NMPU) to strengthen security across Nairobi. The specialised unit aims to improve the speed of officer deployment, enhance operational coordination, and address the city’s growing security needs.
Headquartered at Kamukunji Police Station, the new command will bring policing services closer to Nairobi residents. The NPS highlighted that the unit will focus on crime prevention, critical infrastructure protection, public order management, and traffic enforcement.
Kamukunji Station to Become Security Hub
Kamukunji Police Station has been designated as the NMPU headquarters. The government plans to redevelop the station into a modern security complex featuring operational offices, police housing, and an Integrated Command and Communication Centre (IC4). This centre will provide real-time surveillance and coordinate security responses across Nairobi City County.
A multi-agency technical team, led by Internal Security Principal Secretary Thomas Sakah, has already conducted site inspections ahead of construction set to begin in August.
Model for Future Policing in Kenya
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen described the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit as a blueprint for future policing reforms nationwide. The unit’s structure has been informed by policing models from countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, and Japan.
Once operational, the NMPU will serve as the central command for all policing activities within Nairobi, aligning with broader National Police Service efforts to modernise security operations and enhance service delivery to the public.
