On Monday, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), in collaboration with law enforcement, detained multiple pedestrians in Nairobi's Pipeline area for failing to use footbridges and designated crossings.
The operation targeted individuals crossing busy roads at undesignated points, specifically around the Transami footbridge, where such behavior disrupts traffic flow and endangers both pedestrians and motorists.
NTSA statement: "Joint pedestrian enforcement is underway at Pipeline Transami footbridge, focusing on those obstructing traffic by not using the footbridge. Offenders will be arraigned in court."
Pedestrians were escorted into police vehicles during the crackdown, part of a broader effort to curb unsafe road-crossing habits across Nairobi's major roads.
Similar enforcement actions have been conducted recently at other high-risk locations including Mombasa Road near the GM footbridge and Alsops on Thika Road.
Reports indicate many pedestrians take dangerous shortcuts, such as crossing the Thika Superhighway near Ngara's Fig Tree market despite a footbridge just 100 meters away. This trend is also noted at Pangani and other footbridge sites along the busy highway.
NTSA urges all pedestrians to consistently use designated footbridges and crossings to prevent accidents and ensure smooth traffic movement.
