A family in Nyankono village, Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County, is mourning the deaths of two relatives who were killed just three days apart at their homestead.
The most recent victim, 64-year-old Jane Merewa, was found dead inside her bedroom after being set on fire. Neighbours reported seeing smoke coming from her room before discovering her burnt body. Relatives allege that the attackers poured acid on Jane before setting her ablaze, though police investigations are ongoing to establish the exact details.
This tragedy follows the death of Jane's cousin, who also acted as the family's caretaker. He was found murdered near the main gate of the homestead only days earlier. The family had been preparing to hold a community meeting to discuss his death when news of Jane’s killing arrived.
Family Reaction and Call for Justice
Jane’s niece, who often sought comfort from her aunt during difficult times, described the harrowing moment she reached the scene. She found the windows smashed and smoke still emanating from the room, but her aunt’s body had already been removed.
She recalled Jane as a supportive figure who helped raise her after their grandmother passed away. The niece expressed deep sorrow over the violent nature of Jane’s death and the impact on the family’s sense of safety.
"This home now feels empty and dark. It’s hard to imagine living here peacefully again," she said, appealing to the Kenyan government to ensure justice is served.
