Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang' Nyong'o has identified insufficient funding as a major factor that limited the full realization of Kenya's Vision 2030 development plan. Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on Citizen TV, Nyong'o emphasized the need for stronger resource mobilisation as the country prepares to implement Vision 2060.
According to Nyong'o, Kenya struggled to secure enough domestic revenue and external financing from development partners to meet the ambitious targets set in Vision 2030. He stressed that this experience provides a critical lesson for future long-term planning.
Resource mobilisation key to Vision 2060
"We learned that to achieve Vision 2060, there must be a serious, accurate, and consistent focus on raising resources," Nyong'o stated. He pointed to President William Ruto's wealth fund initiative as an innovative financing model that could support sustainable development.
"The wealth fund is a novel approach that empowers citizens to invest in developmental projects, improving their economic standing. This kind of initiative should be expanded under Vision 2060," he added.
Development beyond electoral cycles
Nyong'o also underscored the importance of policy continuity beyond election periods, noting that elections only determine leadership but do not guarantee coherent development direction.
"Each generation has a duty to advance the nation. Just as the independence generation secured freedom and the 2010 generation enacted a transformative Constitution, our generation must now build a prosperous Kenya," he said.
Planning beyond 2030
Having been involved in crafting Vision 2030, Nyong'o acknowledged that its implementation period is nearing completion and called for forward-looking strategies.
"As Vision 2030 concludes, we must plan beyond it. That is why Vision 2060 is being developed as the next long-term blueprint," he remarked.
President William Ruto recently unveiled Vision 2060, positioning it as Kenya's roadmap for economic and social transformation over the next three decades. The President announced an advisory team co-led by Prof. Hiroyuki Hino and Governor Nyong'o to facilitate nationwide consultations involving experts, policymakers, the private sector, academia, and citizens.
