The National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project has initiated a 20-day Socio-Emotional Skills Development (SESD) training targeting young beneficiaries under its On-the-Job Experience (OJE) component.
This training is currently being rolled out across 18 counties: Isiolo, Marsabit, Laikipia, Samburu, Turkana, Baringo, Nandi, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Lamu, Mombasa, Kilifi, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, and Tana River. These areas were selected to support youth, especially in hardship regions, as part of the government's efforts to enhance youth employability.
Attendance and Financial Support
Initial turnout has been promising, with several counties reporting participation above expectations. Efforts continue to mobilize youth in counties where attendance is still building.
To alleviate financial challenges, the project offers a differentiated daily stipend: KSh 500 for youth in designated hardship counties such as Turkana, West Pokot, Baringo, and others; and KSh 300 for participants in the remaining counties.
Training Focus and Next Steps
During the 20-day induction, participants will acquire key skills including communication, teamwork, resilience, leadership, emotional intelligence, problem-solving, and workplace professionalism. The curriculum aims to equip youth with both personal and professional competencies essential for formal employment.
Upon completing this phase, beneficiaries will embark on a five-month apprenticeship working alongside master craftsmen to gain practical, industry-specific experience.
This initiative aligns with President William Ruto's agenda to expand economic opportunities for young Kenyans and foster their active role in national socio-economic development.
