The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) headquarters at Pawaa Centre has seen a surge of political activity as Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga engages with leaders and supporters from across Kenya.
In recent weeks, Oburu has welcomed delegations from counties including Marsabit, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Turkana, Kilgoris, Nakuru, and Baringo. These meetings form part of a broader strategy to restore cohesion within the party and strengthen its grassroots networks nationwide.
By midweek, Oburu had hosted eight separate groups, reflecting a concerted effort to reconnect with ODM members following a period marked by internal disputes and defections. He also convened a consultative session with county chairpersons and Nairobi Members of County Assembly to address ongoing concerns.
In a statement after meeting the Baringo delegation, Oburu emphasized that these engagements aim to solidify party unity and enhance ODM's reach ahead of future political contests.
Addressing ODM’s Internal Challenges
ODM has recently grappled with factionalism, leadership disagreements, and defections, especially in its traditional strongholds in Western Kenya. These issues have raised questions about the party's electoral prospects and capacity to maintain its dominance.
National Assembly Minority Whip Millie Odhiambo publicly highlighted internal divisions, expressing skepticism about ODM's ability to secure over 100 parliamentary seats as projected by party leaders. She cited the fallout with the Linda Mwananchi movement as a significant factor weakening ODM’s support base.
Similarly, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo warned that unresolved internal disputes could lead to further fragmentation, urging party leadership to prioritize reconciliation.
Renewed Push for National Unity
Oburu’s active hosting of diverse delegations signals ODM’s intent to reposition itself as a truly national party. The outreach is viewed as critical to counter rival political groups that are seeking to capitalize on ODM’s vulnerabilities.
