Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Odinga has reaffirmed Nyanza as an exclusive ODM territory, intensifying the ongoing political tensions with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Speaking at a political event in Homa Bay County on Sunday, August 2, 2026, Oburu emphasized ODM’s commitment to zoning and protecting its traditional support bases ahead of the 2027 General Election.
ODM’s Strongholds Are Off-Limits
Oburu argued that ODM’s areas of influence, including counties where it holds governorships, parliamentary, and county assembly seats, are non-negotiable political zones. He stated, "We start with our areas where we have strongholds, where we have our governors, MPs, and MCAs. These are our zones automatically without negotiations." He was explicit in rejecting UDA’s presence in Nyanza, saying, "We don’t want UDA here in Homa Bay."
Consolidating ODM’s Regional Influence
The senator also called for unity among ODM’s traditional regions, highlighting Western Kenya, North Eastern, Turkana, the Coast, and Maasai areas as key zones where the party aims to strengthen its foothold.
