Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Odinga has indicated his interest in vying for the deputy president position in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

Speaking at a meeting held at State House Nairobi on August 4, 2026, between President William Ruto and village elders nationwide, Oburu confirmed that ODM will not field a presidential candidate, endorsing President Ruto as their preferred choice. However, he emphasized that negotiations remain open for other elective posts, notably the deputy presidency.

Oburu's remarks included:

  • "When elections come, ODM will not have a presidential candidate. Our candidate is President William Ruto."
  • "All other positions are negotiable, particularly number two. Don’t you think I am fit for number two? I think I am good enough."

The Senator’s comments were met with laughter, reflecting a light-hearted yet pointed assertion of his ambitions.

Support for Broad-Based Government

Oburu defended ODM's collaboration with the Kenya Kwanza administration, describing the alliance as a strategic partnership aimed at national development rather than political absorption.

He stated, "We are working with President Ruto in the broad-based government. We are not going to be swallowed by him. We are going to work together to build a strong government and push the country’s vision forward."

Backing President Ruto’s Grassroots Empowerment

Oburu praised President Ruto’s initiative to provide stipends to village elders, calling it a transformative step that previous governments failed to implement.

He remarked, "President Ruto has had the courage to push this through. He is giving power to the powerless. A village elder is no longer just a village elder; now he has recognition and authority."

Context Within ODM’s Deputy Presidency Push

Oburu’s declaration aligns with recent demands from senior ODM officials who have insisted the party must secure the deputy president slot as a condition for supporting President Ruto’s re-election.

At a party meeting on July 27, ODM Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati, National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, and Budget Committee Chairperson Samuel Atandi emphasized a 50-50 power-sharing deal, with ODM nominating the running mate.

Several prominent ODM figures, including Wycliffe Oparanya, Hassan Joho, and Gladys Wanga, have been floated as potential candidates for the deputy presidency, and Oburu’s comments add his name to this growing list ahead of the 2027 elections.
