Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) chairperson Gladys Wanga has urged opposition leaders to avoid opposing government programs purely for political gain, emphasizing that national development should supersede party interests.
Speaking at the launch and dedication of the Marakwet Full Bible in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County on August 1, 2026, Wanga called on all leaders to collaborate on initiatives that advance the country.
"Those in opposition should not oppose just for the sake of opposing. When it comes to building the nation’s future, people must come together and do the work," she stated.
Wanga defended ODM’s partnership with President William Ruto’s government under the broad-based government framework, describing the alliance as a voluntary move aimed at fostering national progress.
Honouring Late Raila Odinga's Leadership Approach
The Homa Bay governor highlighted that ODM’s decision reflects the leadership style of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who distinguished between political rivalry and moments demanding unity for the country’s benefit.
"Raila knew when to engage in politics and when to prioritise the nation," Wanga explained. "He fought political battles but also knew when to put the country first."
Strengthening ODM's Grassroots Presence
Wanga reassured residents of Elgeyo Marakwet that ODM remains politically active locally, working to build grassroots structures and prepare candidates for upcoming local elections.
She reiterated that ODM’s collaboration with President Ruto's administration is a conscious political decision under the leadership of Dr. Oburu Oginga, aimed at advancing Kenya’s development agenda.
