Infotrak CEO Angela Ambitho has suggested that the recent Ol Kalou by-election outcome could enhance former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s approval ratings as the 2027 General Election approaches.
Speaking on Sunday, August 2, 2026, Ambitho noted that the decisive win by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Kamau Ngotho, who was backed by Gachagua, may positively influence public perception of the former deputy president.
Ambitho explained that Gachagua’s previous low approval rating of 4 percent in presidential preference polls was largely due to doubts about his eligibility to contest the presidency amid his ongoing impeachment case.
She added that with the by-election result and Gachagua’s recent declaration to run in 2027, voter confidence could increase, potentially boosting his support base.
“Kenyans are realistic; uncertainty about a candidate’s participation affects their support. Following Ol Kalou and his confirmation to run, these numbers might rise,” Ambitho remarked.

The Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) survey released on July 24, 2026, indicates that President William Ruto remains the frontrunner with a steady 24 percent support, maintaining his lead over a divided opposition.
The poll highlights significant shifts among opposition figures:
- Fred Matiang’i’s support dropped sharply from 32 percent in August 2025 to 14 percent in June 2026.
- Kalonzo Musyoka’s backing declined from 25 percent in November 2025 to 13 percent by June 2026.
- Rigathi Gachagua peaked at 9 percent in May 2026 before slipping to 7 percent in June.
- Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has emerged as the fastest-rising opposition candidate, climbing to 15 percent support by June 2026.
TIFA notes that despite the opposition’s divided support, Ruto’s position remains relatively stable amid ongoing political realignments.
