Opposition politicians have called on authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Mukurwe-ini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia. The legislator was taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi after being detained outside Royal Media Services studios.
Among those demanding answers were Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, Deputy Minority Leader Robert Mbui, and Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo. They convened outside the DCI offices on Kiambu Road shortly after Kaguchia's arrival.
Calls for Due Process
- Legal Access: Senator Maanzo stated that Kaguchia's lawyers had requested access to understand the grounds for his detention and to ensure proper legal procedures are followed.
- Transparency: Maanzo emphasized that if charges exist, Kaguchia should be processed according to the law and presented in court promptly.
- Monitoring: Deputy Minority Leader Robert Mbui highlighted the importance of allowing the MP's legal representation and said opposition leaders were monitoring the situation closely.
Kaguchia was arrested after spending the night at Royal Media Services following an appearance on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi programme. His remarks during the broadcast sparked public discussion and criticism from some political figures.
As of Monday morning, the DCI had not disclosed the specific allegations or charges related to the arrest.
