A new political disagreement has surfaced within Kenya's opposition ranks as three prominent leaders dismissed proposals to dissolve their parties and merge with Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

Former Attorney General and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi, Party of National Unity head Peter Munya, and Devolution Empowerment Party leader Lenny Kivuti jointly refuted reports suggesting they should fold their parties into Gachagua's DCP.

Call for Respectful Political Dialogue

During a press briefing in Nairobi on August 4, the trio urged Gachagua to refrain from divisive rhetoric and instead foster structured dialogue and mutual respect among opposition parties.

Peter Munya emphasized the importance of equality and autonomy in political partnerships, stating:

  • "Durable political partnerships are built on equality, trust and respect for institutional autonomy."
  • "We call upon Gachagua to desist from divisive pronouncements and instead embrace structured dialogue, consultation and respectful engagement among all like-minded political parties."

Background on Gachagua's DCP Expansion

Since his impeachment in 2024, Gachagua has actively promoted the DCP as the key political platform in the Mt Kenya region. He has publicly acknowledged that not having his own party during the 2022 general election was a strategic error and has encouraged other regional parties to join DCP.

Opposition Leaders Stand for Political Freedom

Munya further stated that while there are no personal conflicts with DCP leaders, every Kenyan should be free to choose their political affiliation without intimidation or pressure:

  • "We must stop threatening those with different political backgrounds and beliefs in an attempt to grow our democracy."
  • "It cannot be acceptable for someone to join DCP, yet be criticised for joining another party."

This development highlights ongoing tensions within Kenya's opposition as they navigate unity and diversity ahead of future political contests.
