National Assembly Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro has expressed strong confidence that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will appear on the presidential ballot in the 2027 General Election, despite ongoing legal challenges related to his impeachment.
In an interview on July 31, 2026, Osoro dismissed claims that impeachment proceedings would bar Gachagua from contesting the presidency. He also mentioned that other notable figures like Ndindi Nyoro would be on the ballot.
Views on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's Political Future
Osoro weighed in on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s ambitions, stating that the ODM secretary-general is unlikely to run for president in 2027. Instead, Osoro predicts Sifuna will seek re-election as Nairobi senator, positioning himself for a possible presidential bid in 2032.
According to Osoro, some leaders from Western Kenya are encouraging Sifuna to pursue a presidential run in 2027, but he believes such a move would likely end in defeat. He warned that an unsuccessful presidential attempt could leave Sifuna without any elective office or political platform, given Kenya’s winner-takes-all political system.
Gachagua Maintains Eligibility Amid Legal Disputes
Separately, Rigathi Gachagua has affirmed his eligibility to contest the presidency, citing constitutional protections. Speaking to political analyst Herman Manyora, Gachagua emphasized that Article 99(3) of the Constitution safeguards a candidate’s right to run until all legal appeals are exhausted.
He rejected suggestions that he might be compelled to support another candidate due to the ongoing court case surrounding his impeachment.
