National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro has indicated that a Cabinet reshuffle may be imminent, triggered by the recent Ol Kalou by-election results. The poll exposed a significant decline in political backing for President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza coalition within the Mt Kenya region.

In an interview on Dr Ofweneke’s podcast on July 31, 2026, Osoro, the South Mugirango MP, pointed out that the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate managed only about 12 percent of the vote, losing decisively to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

He emphasized that this outcome signals a shift in regional support, which could lead to a Cabinet realignment to reflect the new political realities. Osoro suggested any changes might coincide with the August 10 implementation of Kenya Kwanza’s cooperation agreement with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Osoro stated:

"Ol Kalou has shown us, and we needed some justification. You voted this way, and you’ve given us 12 percent. We needed some justification for some of our actions going forward. So, if you see some changes around August 10—whether it’s a Cabinet reshuffle or a realignment of our coalition agreement with ODM—we will be justified. We’ll say, ‘Going by the Ol Kalou results, this is the reality.'"

He further noted that the diminished support in Mt Kenya makes the Nyanza region a probable beneficiary of the upcoming Cabinet adjustments, given ODM’s expanding influence within the government.

Calls for Greater Recognition of ODM and Nyanza

Following the by-election, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma urged President Ruto to accord more weight to ODM and the Nyanza region. Speaking on July 22, 2026, Kaluma welcomed the Ol Kalou results, highlighting their potential to enhance ODM's negotiating position ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kaluma remarked, "Ol Kalou, as I said, is a very good thing. Coming from the ODM side of the broad-based government, it confirms a lot. Yes, it confirms many things, and with the president preparing to seek re-election, he now has to take us more seriously."
