Public anger erupted outside Muthaiga Police Station in Nairobi following the death of Eric Otieno, a bodaboda rider who was recently released from police custody.
Otieno was arrested on August 1 on suspicion of preparing to commit a felony and detained at Muthaiga Police Station. The police released him on cash bail the following day, August 2, after his family reportedly paid a reduced bail amount of Sh6,000 from the initial Sh10,000 demand.
Shortly after his release, Otieno was taken to hospital by his family, where he was pronounced dead. Before his death, he had complained of pain in his ribs and alleged that he was beaten while in custody.
A post-mortem examination revealed multiple injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. These findings have prompted police to consider a possible murder investigation as they continue probing the circumstances surrounding his death.
The incident sparked protests outside the police station, with demonstrators demanding accountability. Starehe Sub-County Police Commander addressed the crowd, urging calm and cooperation with ongoing investigations. No injuries or property damage were reported during the demonstration.
The family has called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to intervene and ensure justice is served. IPOA officials have pledged to pursue the matter thoroughly.
Nairobi Police Commander Issa Mohamud confirmed the case is under active investigation amid growing public calls for transparency.
