Patrick Makau, the former marathon world record holder, recently celebrated a remarkable weekend by unveiling his impressive five-bedroom residence in Nguluni, Machakos County.
In addition to the house opening, Makau was honoured with an Honorary Doctorate from Lukenya University and promoted to the rank of Inspector within the National Police Service's General Service Unit (GSU).
Early Life and Running Career
Born in Manyanzaani village, Makau attended Unyuani School and later Kyeni Academy. He began running competitively in 2001, catching the attention of renowned Kenyan marathoner Jimmy Muindi in 2004. This discovery led him to train at the high-altitude Ngong Training Camp, sharpening his endurance and skill.
Makau gained international recognition by winning silver medals at the 2007 IAAF World Road Running Championships and the 2008 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.
World Record Achievement
Makau's defining moment arrived at the 2011 Berlin Marathon, where he set a new world record with a time of 2:03:38. This performance surpassed Haile Gebrselassie's previous record by 21 seconds, cementing Makau's legacy in marathon history. His record stood until 2013 when Wilson Kipsang broke it at the same event.
