The Party of National Unity (PNU), Democratic Party (DP), and Democratic Empowerment Party (DEP) have publicly rejected former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s suggestion to dissolve their parties and merge into the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
Addressing the proposal, PNU leader Peter Munya, DP leader Justin Muturi, and DEP leader Lenny Kivuti criticized the move as divisive and emphasized that political alliances should be formed through mutual agreement rather than imposed directives.
Peter Munya stated that Gachagua lacks the authority to represent all Mt Kenya leaders or political parties, saying, "Gachagua has not been appointed or mandated to speak on behalf of all the people or all parties in the Mt Kenya region."
This coordinated response highlights resistance within Mt Kenya’s political landscape against Gachagua’s efforts to position DCP as the dominant regional party ahead of the 2027 General Election. It underscores emerging fractures among regional political outfits that, despite shared interests, prefer to maintain their distinct identities.
The development complicates Gachagua’s strategy to unify Mt Kenya politics under a single banner, signaling ongoing debates over leadership and political direction in the region.
