Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has indicated that a missile which crashed into a field near Tarnawa Kolonia in eastern Poland early Thursday was likely a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile. The impact created a crater approximately 10 meters wide, about 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

The incident occurred amid a large-scale Russian offensive targeting cities including Lviv, Kyiv, and areas near Kryvyhi Rih in Ukraine. Tusk convened a special meeting in Lublin before visiting the crash site, where military experts confirmed that recovered fragments predominantly matched a Russian Kh-101 missile.

Although there were no casualties reported, the Polish government is treating the event with utmost seriousness. The missile landed outside populated areas, and Polish forces were prepared to intercept it had it continued its trajectory. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that about 20 objects were detected near Polish airspace overnight, with forensic analysis ongoing.

Ukraine’s acting Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha also affirmed that a Russian Kh-101 missile violated NATO airspace by crossing into Poland during Russia’s extensive strikes on Ukraine.

The Polish Prime Minister had met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Lublin the previous evening as Zelensky returned from discussions with US President Joe Biden.
