A 35-year-old Sudanese woman who was eight months pregnant tragically died after falling from the balcony of her home in Bursa, western Turkey.
The incident occurred late Sunday in their fourth-floor apartment. The woman's 37-year-old husband, who was present with their three-year-old daughter at the time, has been taken into police custody as authorities continue their investigation.
According to the husband’s statement, his wife jumped from the bedroom window. He also disclosed a history of solvent abuse that often led to domestic disputes, including an argument on the night of the fall. Neighbours reported hearing a fight prior to the incident.
Turkey does not publish official femicide statistics, but women's organizations tracking suspicious deaths report a rise in cases involving women falling from balconies or windows, often classified by authorities as suicides or unexplained deaths. In the first seven months of this year alone, 215 women were reported killed or found dead under suspicious circumstances.
Since Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention in 2021—a treaty aimed at preventing violence against women—rights groups have expressed concern over the increase in such deaths.
