The upcoming 2026/2027 Premier League season will feature several notable rule changes aimed at improving fairness and game management across all participating clubs.
Expanded VAR Capabilities
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will have increased authority, now able to review whether the ball fully crossed the line in or out of play. It can also intervene when a red card results from a clearly incorrect second yellow or if a card was mistakenly given to the wrong player.
Quick corrections to wrongly awarded corners are also permitted without disrupting the flow of the game. Additionally, no yellow card will be issued for denying a goal-scoring opportunity if the referee applies advantage and a goal is scored.
New disciplinary measures include an automatic red card for deliberately pulling an opponent's hair with excessive force, while less forceful hair pulling will result in a yellow card.
Crackdown on Time-Wasting
To address deliberate delays, the league is introducing strict timing rules. Substitutes must enter the pitch within 10 seconds of being called; failure to comply means the replacement can only come on at the next stoppage and after one minute of resumed play.
Officials will display a visible five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal-kicks. Teams wasting time on throw-ins will forfeit possession, and delaying goal-kicks will concede a corner to the opposition.
Injured players receiving on-field treatment must leave the pitch and remain off for at least one minute after play resumes. When a goalkeeper is treated, the manager must immediately send an outfield player off for a minimum of one minute, except in cases of fouls, collisions, or bleeding.
