President William Ruto has contributed Ksh50 million towards the establishment of a peace centre in Nairobi, supporting the Friends Church Kenya's initiative.
The donation was announced on Monday, August 3, 2026, during a meeting with church leaders and members held at State House Nairobi. The president responded positively after the church requested assistance for the project.
"You said you want to build a peace centre here in Nairobi; I will start you off with Ksh50 million. Begin the work, push forward, and today you will receive my cheque," Ruto declared.
The initial funding aims to kick-start construction, with the president committing to additional support to ensure the project's completion.
Support for Educational Institutions
Besides the peace centre, President Ruto pledged government backing for educational institutions affiliated with the Friends Church, notably Kaimosi Friends University College (KAFUCO) in Vihiga County.
He announced plans to assist in building hostels at KAFUCO to enhance student accommodation.
Friends Church Kenya Influence
The Friends Church, also known as the Quakers, is a major Christian denomination predominantly based in Western Kenya counties such as Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and Trans Nzoia. It maintains a strong presence among communities from these regions residing in other parts of Kenya, including Nairobi.
The church sponsors numerous educational institutions, including Friends School Kamusinga and Friends School Chavakali, as well as healthcare and community facilities, making it a key faith-based organisation in the region.
Its expanding footprint is evident in Nairobi, where branches serve Western Kenya residents, and landmarks like Quaker Road in Donholm bear its name. This road was officially renamed in 2023 through a collaboration involving President Ruto, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
