President William Ruto has lauded Kenya's men's 3000m steeplechase team after they achieved a historic podium sweep at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Kenyan trio—Edmund Serem, Simon Kiprop Koech, and Leonard Kipkemoi Bett—clinched gold, silver, and bronze respectively on July 27, marking a proud moment for the nation.
Kenya Extends Its Steeplechase Legacy
Ruto praised Edmund Serem for leading the Kenyan dominance in the event, highlighting the country's enduring excellence in steeplechase.
"Congratulations to Edmund Serem for steering Kenya to a commanding victory and reinforcing our unmatched legacy in this event," the President said.
He also acknowledged Simon Kiprop Koech and Leonard Kipkemoi Bett for securing second and third places, commending their contributions to Kenya's sporting prestige.
Serem’s Meteoric Rise
Gold medalist Serem, aged 18, was making his Commonwealth Games debut. His rapid ascent includes winning gold at the 2023 African Under-18 Championships, silver at the 2024 African Championships, and bronze at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
He also claimed the 3000m steeplechase title at the 2024 World Under-20 Championships in Lima and was named the 2025 World Athletics Rising Star of the Year.
Leading up to Glasgow, Serem posted a personal best of 8:01.61 at the Rabat Diamond League and delivered strong performances across the Diamond League circuit.
Commonwealth Games Performance
- Edmund Serem won gold with a time of 8:18.23.
- Simon Kiprop Koech took silver clocking 8:18.59.
- Leonard Kipkemoi Bett secured bronze in 8:21.63.
This victory also marked Kenya's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, reinforcing the country's dominance in the men's 3000m steeplechase.
