President William Ruto is set to convene a landmark meeting with over 5,000 private security guards at State House, Nairobi, on Thursday, August 6, 2026. The gathering marks the first time the Head of State will engage directly with this critical workforce, which numbers more than 1.2 million across Kenya.
The Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA), which regulates the sector, has formally invited private security firms, industry associations, and the Kenya National Private Security Workers Union to send representatives to the meeting. The event will begin at 8 a.m.
Reforms and Welfare Improvements
Sources involved in the preparations indicate that President Ruto will announce reforms aimed at enhancing the welfare of private security officers. These reforms are expected to address long-standing concerns such as low wages, extended working hours, lack of medical coverage, and delays in implementing minimum employment standards.
Private security guards play a vital role in safeguarding homes, businesses, public institutions, and other facilities, yet they have often faced challenging working conditions. The meeting is seen as part of the government’s efforts to implement the Private Security Regulation Act fully and promote professionalism within the sector.
Strategic Engagement Ahead of 2027 Elections
This engagement aligns with President Ruto’s broader strategy of deepening ties with organized groups ahead of the 2027 General Election. In recent weeks, he has hosted various key constituencies at State House, including village elders, National Government Administration Officers, and religious leaders.
The PSRA Chief Executive Officer, Philip Leakey Okello, emphasized the importance of confirming attendance to facilitate event planning. The meeting underscores the government's recognition of private security officers as a significant workforce deserving of improved support and recognition.
