President William Ruto has reaffirmed his commitment to advancing development initiatives in Turkana County, highlighting the region's abundant natural resources as a catalyst for economic growth.
Following a meeting with Turkana Members of Parliament at State House Nairobi, Ruto emphasized the need to expedite ongoing projects and explore new opportunities to transform the arid county into a thriving economic centre.
Key Development Projects to Accelerate
The government, in collaboration with county leaders, plans to fast-track several flagship projects, including:
- Affordable housing schemes
- Construction of student hostels
- Development of modern markets
- Fishing infrastructure enhancement
- Road expansion and water supply improvements
These initiatives aim to stimulate local economic activity, improve essential services, and create employment opportunities for Turkana residents.
Security as a Pillar for Progress
President Ruto stressed that sustainable development in Turkana is closely tied to improved security and lasting peace, citing the county's history of cross-border conflicts and livestock raids involving neighbouring countries.
He described security, peace, and social cohesion as critical enablers for unlocking Turkana’s full potential and attracting investment.
Turkana’s Economic Significance
Turkana is endowed with significant natural assets such as oil reserves in the Lokichar Basin, renewable energy resources, fisheries from Lake Turkana, tourism sites, and livestock. It also hosts major projects like the Lake Turkana Wind Power facility and ongoing petroleum exploration.
Recognizing this, the national government has prioritized infrastructure development—roads, electricity, water, and social amenities—to fully harness these opportunities.
Ongoing and Future Investments
The recent consultations build on prior commitments to enhance transport corridors, irrigation schemes, healthcare, education facilities, and fish markets. The government is also exploring strategic projects including a proposed airport and logistics hub to better integrate Turkana into Kenya’s economy.
