The Pretorius family has established a unique academic legacy at the University of Pretoria (UP), spanning over six decades and three generations. Since Müller Pretorius I first enrolled in 1959, the family has collectively earned ten degrees from the institution.

Generational Achievements

Müller Pretorius I set the foundation with multiple qualifications, including a BA, Bachelor of Divinity, BA Honours in History, and a Doctor of Divinity in Church History. His career as a minister emeritus reflected his lifelong dedication to theology and education.

His son, Müller Pretorius II, diverged into engineering, completing a BEng in Metallurgical Engineering and a BIS Honours in Knowledge Management. He has since built a career in engineering consultancy. Additionally, Martie Pretorius, Müller II’s wife, holds a BIur and LLB and works as a company secretary, further enriching the family’s academic credentials.

Continuing the Legacy

The current generation continues this tradition with Müller Pretorius III and his brother Abel both graduating during the May 2026 ceremony. Müller III earned a BEng in Computer Engineering and is now employed at Rockwell Automation. Abel completed a Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences and is pursuing an honours degree in the same field.

Both brothers wore the same ceremonial academic gown that their predecessors donned, symbolising the family's enduring connection to UP.

Beyond Academics

In addition to their academic success, the Pretorius brothers have excelled in sports. Müller III represented UP in volleyball at the 2025 USSA Volleyball Tournament, while Abel was named TuksRugby U20 Player of the Year in 2024 and contributed to their 2026 Varsity Cup victory.

Balancing sports and studies has been integral to their achievements. Müller III credits physical activity for helping him maintain focus and energy during demanding academic periods.

A Family Tradition of Education

Reflecting on their journey, Müller III shared that growing up hearing stories of their family's history at UP made the university a natural choice. Their simultaneous graduation inspired the university’s #SameGownDifferentGenerations campaign, celebrating the values of legacy, discipline, and education that have bound the Pretorius family for over 60 years.

As Müller III emphasised, "We are not guaranteed tomorrow. The only chance we have to make a difference is now."
