The Public Service Commission (PSC) has revealed the timetable for the 2026 Proficiency Examination targeting clerical officers aiming for career advancement within the civil service.
The exams are slated to run from Monday, September 21, through Thursday, September 24, 2026, and will be conducted at eight designated centers across the country. These locations include Machakos, Nyeri, Embu, Garissa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Eldoret. Specific venues will be communicated to candidates after registration.
Eligibility and Registration Details
To qualify, candidates must have attained at least a C- grade in their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and have served as clerical officers for a minimum of one year.
New applicants are required to submit Form A through their departmental heads, while repeat candidates use Form B. Both forms are accessible on the PSC website at www.publicservice.go.ke. Completed forms along with e-Citizen payment receipts must be submitted to the PSC office in Nairobi by Friday, August 28, 2026.
Fees and Late Registration
- Registration fee: Ksh 2,625
- Examination fee: Ksh 875 per paper (7 papers in total)
- e-Citizen service charge: Ksh 50
Late registration is permitted until September 3, 2026, with an additional penalty of Ksh 525.
Exam Purpose and Career Progression
The Proficiency Examination, administered annually by the Kenya School of Government on behalf of PSC, assesses clerical officers’ operational skills. Successful candidates may earn promotions within job groups, starting from Clerical Officer II (Job Group F/CSG 14) up to Chief Clerical Officer (Job Group J/CSG 11).
Those who passed the 2025 exams can now collect their certificates at PSC House Nairobi by presenting their national ID or passport.
