This initiative targets specific groups living in the country, including those under family sponsorship, permanent residents, investors, and citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.
Eligibility and Conditions
- Applicants must hold an active national ID card.
- Their residence permit should be valid for at least three months at the time of application.
- Current residence visa status remains unchanged during the process.
Once granted, the permit allows holders to work for a single employer, ensuring a formal entry into Qatar's workforce without the need to alter their immigration status.
Implications for Kenyan Workers
This development is significant for foreign residents, including Kenyans who have established ties through family or investment but have not yet formally joined the labour market. Qatar continues to be a key destination for Kenyan labour migration, with government-coordinated recruitment programmes facilitating structured employment opportunities. For instance, in December 2024, 290 Kenyans were sent to Qatar under such a programme.
