The future of Edwin Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi Party (LMPK) is expected to become clearer this week following a decision by the Registrar of Political Parties to revisit his earlier refusal to register the party.

Registrar John Cox Lorionokou had initially denied the party's registration application, citing concerns that the proposed name closely resembled existing reserved slogans such as "Linda Mkenya" and "Boresha Kenya," which, according to him, was against the provisions of Section 8 of the Political Parties Act.

On Tuesday, Sifuna led a delegation of party officials to the Registrar's Nairobi offices for discussions aimed at resolving the dispute. The meeting ended on a positive note, with the Registrar agreeing to review the decision and provide feedback by the end of the week.

Caroli Omondi, the movement's spokesperson and MP for Suba South, described the engagement as cordial, emphasizing the importance of the party name in finalising their registration process. "Once we have the name, everything will fall into place," Omondi said.

The party has argued that their chosen name complies with legal requirements and should be accepted, as the registration outcome will determine their ability to formally participate as a political party in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Movement's Political Ambitions

Linda Mwananchi has gained traction as a political movement, notably through grassroots rallies and expanding activities beyond Nairobi into regions like Western Kenya. The movement focuses on key issues such as the cost of living, unemployment, governance, and accountability, positioning itself as a platform for citizens dissatisfied with the current political establishment.

Prominent leaders including Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, and MPs Babu Owino, Jack Wamboka, Clive Gisairo, Joshua Kimilu, and Danson Mwashako were part of the delegation that met the Registrar.

Jack Wamboka of Bumula described the registration effort as a crucial step toward building a people-centered movement committed to justice, accountability, and servant leadership. Similarly, Bomachoge Borabu MP Obadiah Barongo highlighted the importance of an open and vibrant multi-party democracy that allows all voices to be heard.
