Musician-turned-politician Reuben Kigame has raised concerns about the opposition Linda Mwananchi movement’s strategy of incorporating veteran politicians. Speaking on his official X account on August 1, 2026, Kigame warned that the coalition’s growing dependence on leaders who have previously served in government could damage its credibility ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kigame’s comments came shortly after former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa joined Linda Mwananchi following her departure from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Jumwa cited political frustrations and marginalisation within UDA as reasons for her exit.
Concerns Over Recycling Political Figures
Without naming individuals, Kigame criticised the practice of recycling politicians who have previously held government positions, arguing this approach undermines the movement’s prospects. He recalled his earlier warnings during the formation of the UDA government in 2022, when he predicted that appointing leaders who lacked integrity would weaken the administration.
Linda Mwananchi has rapidly expanded in recent months, attracting leaders like Siaya Governor James Orengo, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. The coalition positions itself as an alternative platform focused on governance reforms, accountability, and citizen welfare.
Political Realignments and Public Debate
The inclusion of Jumwa, welcomed publicly by Orengo during a Coast region tour, has intensified discussions about the movement’s direction. Supporters argue that bringing in established politicians broadens the coalition’s national appeal. However, critics, including Kigame, caution that genuine change requires fresh leadership rather than figures associated with past administrations.
Kigame, who unsuccessfully sought the presidency in 2022 and remains a vocal advocate for ethical leadership, emphasises the need for integrity over political expediency across Kenya’s political spectrum.
As Kenya approaches the 2027 polls, Linda Mwananchi faces the challenge of balancing expansion with maintaining its reformist identity amid ongoing political realignments.
