Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised concerns about a possible arrest of Auditor General Nancy Gathungu, alleging involvement of key security agencies in a politically motivated move.
Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence on July 31, Gachagua stated that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) privately informed him that President William Ruto had directed them to find justification to detain Gathungu. This, he claims, is a response to her audit reports that uncovered alleged misappropriation of public funds.
Claims of Security Officers’ Discontent
Gachagua asserted that some security personnel opposed the directive, questioning the rationale behind fabricating charges against an independent constitutional officer who is merely fulfilling her mandate of overseeing public expenditure.
He urged the government to reconsider plans against Gathungu, emphasizing the independence of her office and the importance of her work in exposing potential corruption.
Information Channels Within Government
The former deputy president also explained how he acquires insider information from patriotic civil servants who reportedly share developments with him, expressing dissatisfaction with the current administration.
- He cited his earlier prediction of President Ruto’s national address content, which included a long-term development plan and a role for former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
- Gachagua claimed that a majority of civil servants, including police and NIS officers, are unhappy with the government’s direction.
He warned Kenyans that should Nancy Gathungu be arrested, it would be a direct consequence of her commitment to transparency and accountability.
Gachagua did not provide evidence to substantiate his allegations.
