Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua is deliberating on whether to participate in the upcoming Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled for October 20 in the Rift Valley region.

The national event will be jointly hosted by Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi counties, with the main ceremony set for Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. Gachagua confirmed receiving a standing invitation to the festivities but has yet to decide on attending.

Concerns Over Political Interference

In an interview on July 31, Gachagua accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of deliberately disrupting his political meetings nationwide, including in his stronghold of Mt Kenya. He expressed uncertainty about whether he would be allowed to visit areas predominantly inhabited by the Kalenjin community.

"Murkomen has been unleashing terror on me, in my own home, the mountain. I don't know whether they will allow me to visit the Kalenjin nation. I will try. I am a fearless person," Gachagua stated.

Planned Visits and Political Significance

  • Gachagua mentioned invitations to attend events in South Rift counties such as Emurua Dikirr, Bomet, and Kericho.
  • He also has an invitation to the Mashujaa Day event at Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet.
  • The DCP leader described encountering disorder and state-backed disruptions at his gatherings, including in Mt Kenya.

His potential attendance is seen as a litmus test for his political acceptance in Rift Valley, a region critical to the evolving alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Background on Mashujaa Day Venue Changes

Initially, Interior CS Murkomen had announced that the celebrations would take place at Kamariny Stadium, Elgeyo Marakwet, a facility whose completion was delayed since a 2017 Jubilee campaign pledge. However, President William Ruto later revised the plan after consulting with local leaders, settling on Eldoret City’s Kipchoge Keino Stadium as the main venue. The three counties will co-host under a new rotating regional model described as historic.

Gachagua remains undecided on his attendance and is still evaluating the invitation amid the tense political climate.
