Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has firmly rejected the idea of selecting the opposition's 2027 presidential flagbearer through closed-door discussions.
Speaking from his Wamunyoro residence on July 31, Gachagua emphasized that every contender must actively engage with the electorate rather than rely on behind-the-scenes deals. Without naming individuals, he criticized some opposition figures for expecting top positions without matching grassroots efforts.
Opposition Flagbearer Selection Must Be Transparent
"Every leader must sell their party to Kenyans. This idea of saying, 'Leave it to me,' begs the question, leave it to you as who? We are working day and night, mobilising supporters, engaging wananchi and fighting for their interests. Then someone expects us to sit in a hotel and start sharing positions, saying, 'You take this, and I take that.' That will not happen," Gachagua stated.
His remarks come amid ongoing commitments within the opposition to unite behind a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. Gachagua’s stance underscores the importance of public support over internal negotiations.
DCP's Ambitions in Narok County
During a meeting with a delegation from Narok Town Ward led by DCP MCA Douglas Masikonde, Gachagua announced the party’s plans to contest every elective seat in Narok County.

He expressed confidence that DCP has quickly become the leading political force in the county, urging skeptics to observe the party’s growing grassroots support.
