Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once again stirred political debate by accurately forecasting major elements of President William Ruto’s recent State of the Nation Address before it was officially delivered. This has sparked fresh scrutiny regarding the sources of his intelligence within government circles.
Speaking approximately an hour prior to the president’s speech, Gachagua revealed that Ruto would unveil a Vision 2060 development plan and suggested that former President Uhuru Kenyatta would be appointed to lead its implementation. Although Ruto did not explicitly mention Uhuru, he later announced plans to initiate a national dialogue on a long-term development agenda extending beyond Vision 2030.
Gachagua criticized the current administration, stating, "He has already destroyed Vision 2030, and now wants to deceive Kenyans with Vision 2060." This is not the first instance where Gachagua has anticipated government moves; he has previously predicted fuel price increases, warned of potential violence during by-elections, and openly challenged security operations ahead of official announcements.
Supporters argue that his predictions often align with subsequent events, while critics question how he accesses such sensitive information. Gachagua claims to enjoy broad support within government institutions, asserting, "75 per cent of NIS is with me. 90 per cent of National Police Service is with me. The entire civil service is with me." He has also encouraged public servants to continue sharing information through secure channels he has established.
Political analysts note that these recurring leaks present a significant challenge for the Kenya Kwanza administration, potentially undermining public confidence in the government’s ability to safeguard confidential information. Others observe that Gachagua has successfully positioned himself as a political insider, influencing public discourse before official communications are made.
