Senior Kenya Kwanza officials are intensifying efforts to consolidate political support in Mt Kenya East, a key battleground ahead of the 2027 general elections.

On Friday, two government-led events are set to take place in Embu County, signaling a strategic counter-move following Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s recent three-day tour of Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi counties.

High-Level Delegation for Education Event

A powerful delegation, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, several Cabinet Secretaries, and President William Ruto’s close aides, will attend the Mbeere North Education Day. Although officially an education-focused event organized by Mbeere North MP Leo Wamuthende, it is widely viewed as a political mobilisation effort by Kenya Kwanza in the region.

Fundraiser Led by Interior CS Murkomen

Simultaneously, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen will spearhead a Sh10 million fundraiser at St Stephen’s Secondary School in Kagaari. The event will also feature Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku, Governor Cecily Mbarire, Senator Alexander Mundigi, and other senior officials.

Political Context

These engagements come shortly after DCP Rigathi Gachagua declared his intent to deny President Ruto significant support in Mt Kenya East, a region where the ruling coalition believes it can still challenge the DCP’s influence. Gachagua claimed UDA’s support in the area has dwindled considerably, asserting that only a small fraction of voters remain loyal to Ruto.

President Ruto recently visited the region, attending events in Meru and Embu and announcing plans for an August development tour inspecting projects valued at Sh20 billion.
