President William Ruto has declared that Kenya stands on the brink of a transformative economic era, driven by enhanced macroeconomic stability and Africa’s expanding role in the global market.
In his recent State of the Nation address, Ruto emphasized that the country has built a solid economic foundation over the past four years, positioning Kenya to capitalize on emerging prospects.
Key Drivers of Kenya’s Economic Momentum
- Restored Economic Stability: The government has stabilized the Kenyan shilling, rebuilt foreign exchange reserves to over $15 billion—equivalent to 6.5 months of import cover—and lowered inflation and borrowing costs.
- Investor Confidence: Kenya attracted a record $3.2 billion in foreign direct investment last year, more than doubling the 2022 figure. The country also ranked as Africa’s most competitive economy in the 2025 IMD World Competitiveness Ranking.
- Institutional Foundations: New entities like the National Infrastructure Fund and a sovereign wealth fund have been established to support sustainable, long-term development beyond political cycles.
- Vision 2030 Transition: With the current development blueprint nearing its conclusion, Kenya has an opportunity to craft a fresh long-term national framework.
Africa’s Rising Economic Potential
Ruto highlighted Africa’s demographic growth, abundant renewable energy and agricultural resources, and increasing global investor interest as factors positioning the continent at the center of the next global economic wave.
He noted that nine of the world’s fastest-growing economies are African and projected that by 2050, one in every four people on Earth will be African.
Reflecting on past missed opportunities during previous global shifts, the President called on Kenyans to set aside short-term pressures and prepare for a once-in-a-generation chance to reshape the nation’s economic future.
"While we may not have taken full advantage of the previous three great waves of global transformation, we have a historic moment and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Ruto said.
