President William Ruto is reportedly reassessing his political strategy for the 2027 general elections following indications of weakening support in the Mt Kenya region, a key base in his 2022 victory.
Recent setbacks, including the United Democratic Alliance's poor performance in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election and high-profile defections such as Nyandarua Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha, have raised concerns about the region’s reliability. Mt Kenya contributed approximately 47% of the votes that secured Ruto’s presidency in 2022, but political tensions after the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have complicated this dynamic.
Political analysts suggest that Ruto may need to broaden his coalition beyond Mt Kenya. City lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has advised the President to consider selecting a running mate from the Luo or Luhya communities, with a preference for Western Kenya, which has a growing voter base and could provide a fresh political anchor.
Western Kenya, encompassing counties such as Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Trans Nzoia, and Vihiga, has expanded its registered voters to about 2.92 million, making it the country's second-largest voting bloc after Mt Kenya’s 5.7 million. Analysts argue that a running mate from this region could not only augment the Kenya Kwanza alliance’s vote tally but also counter the rising influence of opposition figures like Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
Ruto has intensified efforts to engage Western Kenya voters, urging increased voter registration and highlighting the region’s untapped electoral potential. He noted that approximately 1.5 million eligible voters in Western Kenya possess national ID cards but remain unregistered.
Additionally, developments in Nyanza, with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i entering the presidential race under the Jubilee Party, could fragment opposition votes, further influencing coalition dynamics.
Political analyst Daniel Orogo emphasized that while Western Kenya’s numbers make it a compelling option for a running mate, success will depend on robust grassroots mobilisation and a resonant campaign message. He cautioned that mere selection of a deputy from the region does not guarantee electoral victory.
As the 2027 elections approach, the shifting political landscape in Mt Kenya and the growing significance of Western Kenya are shaping President Ruto’s coalition-building strategy, potentially redefining Kenya's political alliances.
