Nominated National Assembly Member Sabina Chege has confirmed her intention to run for a parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election, dismissing any plans to contest the Murang’a Woman Representative position.
In an interview with K24 TV on August 5, 2026, Chege stated that she has decided to seek a constituency seat but withheld details on the specific area and political party she will represent, promising to disclose this information in the near future.
Supporting Emerging Women Leaders
Chege explained her decision not to vie for the Woman Representative seat as a deliberate move to create opportunities for younger women she has mentored over the years. She highlighted that many of these women have shown interest in the affirmative action role, with some having worked closely with her foundation.
"I have mentored many young women who are now ready to take up leadership positions. It is only fair that I allow them to grow," she said, citing Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina as an example of a former foundation employee who transitioned into elective politics.
Political Background and Recent Developments
Chege’s announcement follows her unsuccessful 2022 bid for the Murang’a gubernatorial seat. Subsequently, she was appointed to the Azimio la Umoja Coalition’s National Executive Council, focusing on coalition mobilization in the Mt Kenya region, and later nominated to the National Assembly by the Jubilee Party.
Prior to the 2022 elections, she was also shortlisted as a potential deputy president candidate for the Azimio coalition but stepped aside when Martha Karua was chosen as Raila Odinga’s running mate.
Her declaration comes amid shifting political dynamics in Murang’a, where Governor Irungu Kang’ata recently left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), and former Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau withdrew from the gubernatorial race to concentrate on strengthening the United Opposition.
