The recovery of the cargo vessel MV DAN, grounded off Nyali Beach since June 22, is progressing toward execution following the appointment of a salvage contractor and ongoing regulatory reviews.
The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) confirmed that Yaa Holdings Limited has been hired by the vessel’s owner, SLA Maritime Co. S.A., to carry out the salvage operation. The proposed recovery plan is currently undergoing technical and regulatory assessments ahead of a refloating operation expected to commence in mid-August.
KMA Director General, CPA Omae Nyarandi, stated that preparations have intensified after consultations among government agencies, the vessel owner, and local representatives. He emphasized the importance of favorable weather and tidal conditions for the operation’s success.
“Provided all approvals are secured and specialised salvage equipment arrives on time, we anticipate starting the refloating exercise in mid-August to leverage optimal tidal and weather conditions,” said Nyarandi.
The vessel remains under close monitoring by multiple government bodies, including the Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Navy, and Kenya Ports Authority, to ensure maritime safety, environmental protection, and crew welfare. The Coast Guard maintains 24-hour security to prevent unauthorized access and vandalism.
Earlier inspections revealed the ship’s hull is intact with no signs of structural damage or oil leaks, indicating a low risk of marine pollution. Nonetheless, precautionary measures remain in place as surveillance continues.
KMA will oversee the entire salvage process to ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations and environmental standards. The authority reassured the public and maritime stakeholders that the situation is stable and updates will be provided as the recovery progresses.
